Loved the design and function of this surge protector, until the time came when it was supposed to protect my desktop computer and monitor. It lists a $50,000 warranty for damaged equipment from surge protector failure. Absolutely false!
We had a lightening strike near us and the only power that went out was my surge protector, computer and monitor I had connected to this surge protector. The surge protector would not turn on and I initially thought, "thank goodness it did its job." Despite plugging my computer and monitor into the wall outlet, neither worked. So I tried a different wall outlet and it still didn’t work.
I took my monitor and computer to a reputable PC repair company. The technician said I was lucky to have a Sony VAIO which had a built-in surge protector. That surge protector burnt out, but did its job in protecting my computer. The Samsung flat panel monitor did not have a surge back-up and was destroyed.
I had the computer repaired, but had to replace my monitor. I called Tripp Lite and they argued it was not the fault of the surge protector. Really? I spoke to that person’s supervisor and they said to return the surge protector … at my shipping expense.
I shipped the Tripp Lite, the computer repair shop’s invoice AND the fried component to Tripp Lite. I also sent my monitor’s purchase receipt and the repair technician’s assessment that my monitor was destroyed. Fortunately, I shipped the package insured and with a return signature receipt.
I called Tripp Lite two weeks later and they denied receiving anything from me. I had the return receipt in my hand and told them what date, what time and who signed for the package at their company. They miraculously found that indeed it had been returned, but Tripp Lite said it was not the fault of the surge protector. I argued about the computer’s own back-up component being burnt out.
They said I must not have had my equipment connected to the surge protector, even though the surge protector itself no longer worked. They refused to pay the cost of the computer repair, $195 and any pro-rated cost for the damaged monitor that was only two years old.
They did not honor their warranty whatsoever! All they did was send me a new surge protector. It’s still in the unopened box. I wouldn’t give it to my worst enemy.
I urge you not to rely on the Tripp Lite for surge protection. First, it doesn’t work to protect your equipment. Second, the company was deceptive in claiming they didn’t receive my return. And third, they found a way NOT to honor the warranty.
I purchased this to replace a similar device that came in a desk I bought 20 years ago. The original equipment had rocker toggle switches, and two of them simply "blew off" for no apparent reason and sparked when I tried to replace them. The switches on this device are not as substantial, but seemed to work ok when I turned them on, and have indicator lights below them. All are working so far. The back of the unit has 4 labeled plugs for the switches on front. Nothing very complicated here. So why only 3 stars? I read the other reviews including the one that mentioned a power surge and not standing behind their guarantee. When I looked online at the guarantee after registering my device, I found this statement: "Reimbursement dollar limits will be equal to that of the Tripp Lite power protection protector." There is lots of other legal language you can read for yourself on their website, but I’m not counting on them buying me a new desktop or printer based on what I see there, which is disappointing considering they seem to use a lot of glowing language as part of their marketing. Who cares if they send me $30 if my $1000 imac is dead from a lightning strike?
The Tripp Lite 6 outlet surge suppressor and power strip looks like it will do exactly what I need it to. I’m using it a little differently than the description. The description says that it is made to hold a monitor. I’m using it to for my laptop. The laptop sits on top instead of a monitor.
This model has 1 outlet that is powered even if the master power switch is off. Of course, the Tripp Lite has to be plugged in. It has 1 outlet that is powered as long as the master switch is on. Those 2 outlets do not have their own power switches. The other 4 outlets have their own power switches. Those 4 switches are labelled on the front from right to left; MONITOR, PRINTER, AUX1, AUX2. There is nothing meaningful about those labels. Anything can be plugged into the outlets.
The front has 2 lights, one green and one red. The green light is labelled "surge-protected". That light indicates the surge suppression is working. The red light is below the green light and indicates that the outlet the unit is plugged into is wired correctly. I’m not an electrician, but, I think if either one of these lights goes out, stop using the unit.
The back of the unit obviously has the 6 outlets. It also has some other things worth describing. On the far left side the first outlet is the one that is powered continuously. There is an amber light to the right of it indicating it is powered. On the far right is a button labelled "PUSH RESET". This is the circuit breaker reset switch. The unit has an internal circuit breaker. If that trips, the entire unit will be out of power.Push this button to reset. The circuit breaker trips if the unit is overloaded. The instruction sheet says the following: "Each outlet can handle up to 15 amps, but do not exceed a total of more than 15 amps for all outlets".
Lastly, there are 2 phone jacks. Using these will protect your phone line from surges. These are only for someone who has a landline telephone. I don’t, so, I will not be using these jacks.
